TLC’s Katherine Thomas School Holds Celebration of Nations

Rockville, Md. — TLC—The Treatment and Learning Centers’ Katherine Thomas School welcomed more than 100 grandparents and special guests for a trip around the world at Celebration of Nations on May 6, 2011. KTS is a special education school for students with moderate to severe language and learning disabilities and/or highfunctioning autism, preschool through 12th grade.

This special day began with a show led by Amy Gardiner, KTS Music Teacher. Students performed songs and dances from China, Greece, and an old English folk song. Ms. Gardiner sang a moving rendition of Israel Kamakawiwo’ole’s medley of “Over the Rainbow” and “What a Wonderful World” accompanied by 8th grader, Chris on ukulele. Guests also enjoyed a lively puppet performance, sword dance, and a play called Great Limba Tree.

Students and their guests traveled as “tourists” to six elaborately decorated classrooms representing China, England, Africa, USA, Latin America, and Greece, sampling cuisine from each region and sharing art, games, activities, maps, videos, slide shows, clothing, books, information about each area. One grandparent actually visited for the special day from Ethiopia! Fifth grader, Tommy said, “I liked when I got to spend time with them (grandparents) and I took them to all the countries.” Tommy’s Grandparents came from Chatham, PA.

“Grandparents and Special Friends Day is my favorite day at KTS. I enjoy meeting the special people in our students’ lives. Students get to showcase their talents and our staff get to demonstrate their extraordinary skills and this is all shared with our warm, caring community,” said Christina Bernabe, Education Director, who coordinated the event with the KTS Spirit Committee and Specialist Teachers. KTS staff values the opportunity to embrace cultural diversity of staff and students through the Celebration of Nations and thanks our wonderful community of supporters who helped make this event possible.
