TLC’s Katherine Thomas School Students Embrace Community Service Day

Rockville, Md. — TLC—The Treatment and Learning Centers’ Katherine Thomas School held a special school-wide Community Service Day on April 1 in celebration of the school’s 15th Anniversary. KTS is a special education school for students with moderate to severe language and learning disabilities and/or high-functioning autism, preschool through 12th grade.

Students in the lower school and high school worked together in cross-grade groupings for the entire event, with older students assisting younger students. Community beautification efforts included landscaping and cleaning up the grounds at KTS and the Early Learning Center, TLC’s childcare and preschool in North Potomac. Students also made special 15th anniversary memory quilts and birdhouses for their school.

To comfort members of the community, students made one hundred personal care kits, 4 dozen brownies, and 75 sandwiches and donated them to a homeless shelter. Students also made eight fleece blankets that were donated to a women’s shelter.

The event was organized by Gwenn Blau, Special Education Director and Kathleen Gould, Special Education Teacher. Said Blau: “Community Service Day brought our own community together with pride and good spirit. It brought such joy watching the high school students mentor younger students while they worked on a variety of projects to be donated to other organizations and our own community.“
