Internships

Ints

An internship is an effective way to connect your academic experience with obtaining school credits. It allows you to gain valuable exposure to the workplace, provides the opportunity for skill development, and gives you a competitive edge in the job search.

TLC provides Internship opportunities in the fields of Special Education, Speech-Language Pathology, Occupational Therapy, Social Work, Psychology, and Marketing.

Most of TLC’s Internship/Externship opportunities are unpaid and are solely in place for satisfying practicum credits. Internships are almost exclusively for Master’s/PHD level students.

Externships

The TLC Outpatient Services, the Testing, Tutoring, and Counseling Department (TT&C) is happy to offer externship opportunities at each of the three training levels: Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced.

All Application materials are due by January 29, 2027

Please email the supervisor listed below with your CV, cover letter, 2 letters of recommendation, and a deidentified assessment report or deidentified case conceptualization, depending on your training level.

Prospective externs will be contacted for an interview via Zoom.

Assessment Externship

Supervisor: Dr. Sarah Towne, PsyD
Senior Psychologist, TT&C
301-424-5200 x 102
stowne@ttlc.org

The Assessment Externship includes participation in the parent/client intake, administration, scoring, and interpretation of the testing measures, and writing of the integrative reports. Students also participate in providing feedback to the clients and families.

Assessments conducted by our department may include:

  • Autism Assessments
  • Developmental Evaluations
  • Neuropsychological Evaluations
  • Psychoeducational Evaluations
  • Disability Eligibility Assessments
  • Admissions Testing

Externs engage in assessment activities, on average, for 9-10 hours per week, with the goal of assisting with at least 1 to 2 assessments per month.

Students should plan to be onsite between 8:30 and 4 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and/or Fridays.

Therapy Externship:

Supervisor: Dr. Ji-Young Yoon, PhD
Psychologist, TT&C
301-424-5200 x 223
jyoon@ttlc.org

The Therapy-Focused extern may provide individual, group, and family therapy to children, adolescents, and their families or caregivers.

Clients range in age from 4 years old to adults, and common diagnoses include anxiety, depression, autism, ADHD, and learning disabilities.

Our department uses play therapy, parent consultations, family therapy, and social skills training. For adolescents and adults, we also offer cognitive-behavioral therapy and talk therapies such as humanistic, interpersonal, and systems-focused approaches.

Externs will plan and engage in therapeutic activities for at least 10 hours weekly with both group and individual clients.

Most clients require after-school sessions, so students should plan to be onsite from 12:00 pm to 7:00 pm at least 2 days per week. A licensed clinician or counselor will be present whenever students see clients.

Combined Externship:

Supervisor: Dr. Christen Fanelli, PhD
Director, TT&C
310-424-5200 x 226
Cfanelli@ttlc.org

The Advanced Practicum student will participate in a combination of therapy and neuropsychological assessments.

Students will learn to conduct parent/client intakes, choose suitable tests, and enhance interpretation skills through report writing. They will also practice giving clear and helpful feedback to clients and families.

Students will also refine their therapeutic approach while working with diverse clients and needs. Counseling may include play therapy, family sessions, social skills training, or cognitive-behavioral and traditional talk therapies for adolescents and adults.

Student caseloads will be determined based on both student interests and departmental needs. A minimum of 10 direct service hours per week is required.

Schedules vary according to caseload, but students must spend at least two and a half days onsite and include some after-school or evening hours for therapy.
